Technology Fountainheads: The Management Challenge of R and D Consortia by E. Raymond Corey,
Since the formation of the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) in 1973, R&D consortia in the United States have become powerful engines of economic development, advancing technology creation and dissemination in entire industries. In Technology Fountainheads, Corey explores the social, economic, and political aspects of forming and managing these collaborative ventures among business, government, and academia. The book draws on the experiences of six of the oldest and largest consortia - EPRI, the Gas Research Institute, Semiconductor Research Corporation, Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corporation, Bell Communications Research, and SEMATECH - to reveal why, instead of squelching the innovation that comes from interfirm competition, R&D consortia have in fact helped to accelerate market growth and improve American competitiveness. Corey outlines the essential traits of successful consortia - a compelling initial vision, a sustainable mission, and strong leadership - and explores critical issues in consortium management, including the planning process and the multiple influences of consortia members, external interest groups, and government agencies in setting the R&D agenda. He considers the key elements of consortia strategy - membership delineation, funding mechanisms, R&D sourcing arrangements, product lines, and technology delivery systems. He also compares the rise of R&D consortia in the United States, Japan, and Europe. Finally, Corey evaluates the future of R&D consortia, the economic consequences of their continued growth, and the necessity of constructive government policy in realizing the full benefits of collaborative R&D for national economic development.

A Life in Magic Chemistry: Autobiographical Reflections of a Nobel Prize Winner by George A. Olah,
A Life in Magic Chemistry: Autobiographical Reflections of a Nobel Prize Winner by George A. Olah,
The fascinating autobiographical reflections of Nobel Prize winner George Olah How did a young man who grew up in Hungary between the two World Wars go from cleaning rubble and moving pianos at the end of World War II in the Budapest Opera House to winning the Nobel Prize in Chemistry? George Olah takes us on a remarkable journey from Budapest to Cleveland to Los Angeles– with a stopoverin Stockholm, of course. An innovative scientist, George Olah is truly one of a kind, whose amazing research into extremely strong acids and their new chemistry yielded what is now commonly known as superacidic " magic acid chemistry." A Life of Magic Chemistry is an intimate look at the many journeys that George Olah has traveled– from his early research and teaching in Hungary, to his move to North America where, during his years in industry, he continued his study of the elusive cations of carbon, to his return to academia in Cleveland, and, finally, his move to Los Angeles, where he built the Loke Hydrocarbon Research Institute to find new solutions to the grave problem of the world’ s diminishing natural oil and gas resources and to mitigate global warming by recycling carbon dioxide into hydrocarbon fuels and products. Professor Olah invites the reader to enjoy the story of his remarkable path– marked by hard work, imagination, and never-ending quests for discovery– which eventually led to the Nobel Prize. Intertwining his research and teaching with a unique personal writing style truly makes A Life of Magic Chemistry an engaging read. His autobiography not only touches on his exhilarating life and pursuit for new chemistry but also reflects on the broader meaningof science in our perpetual search for understanding and knowledge.

Uganda Virus Research Institute - The Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI), located in Entebbe, Uganda, was established in 1936 as the Yellow Fever Research Institute by the Rockefeller Foundation. In 1950, after gaining regional recognition it was renamed the East African Virus Research institute (EAVRI).

International Peace Research Institute, Oslo - The International Peace Research Institute, Oslo (PRIO) was founded by Johan Galtung as an affiliate of the University of Oslo in 1959 and became an independent institute in 1966. It was one of the first centres of peace research in the world, and it is Norway’s only peace research institute.

Institute of Cetacean Research - Institute of Cetacean Research (ICR) is a Japanese privately-owned, non-profit institution that claims to carry out the scientific research into cetaceans. It grew out of the Whale Research Institute (founded 1947) which in turn was an off-shoot of Nakabe Scientific Research Centre (founded 1941).

Research institute - A research institute is a establishment endowed for doing research. Though the term often implies scientific research, there are also many research institutes in the social sciences as well, especially for sociological and historical research.

Specifically, emphasis is placed on: service relationships across borders; methodological issues of international service marketing research; service internationalization international marketing research and modes of ...

Science Institution Association - Science Institution Association Institutions, Institutional Change and Economic Performance Continuing his groundbreaking analysis of economic structures, Douglass North develops an analytical framework for explaining the ways in which institutions science institution association and institutional change affect the performance of economies, both at a given time science institution association and over time. Institutions exist, he argues, due to the uncertainties involved in human interaction; they are the constraints devised to structure that interaction. Yet, institutions vary widely in their consequences for economic ...
